WineTour 1 - The crus where Arneis originated
SHORT RING FOR HIKINGAn itinerary that winds entirely through the Canale territory and crosses many of its most famous crus, including Renesio, the ancient toponym from which the dialect term Arneis originated, later rising to indicate the Arneis DOCG vine and wine.
Technical data:
difficulty: E - difficulty bike: MC - time: 3,30 h
distance: 13.00 km + 1 km (intermediate section)
min / max elevation: 177 m / 305 m
elev. gain / loss: 300m / -300mGoing up from the inhabited center of Canale and its medieval civic tower towards the Capuchin Convent, you go through the Renesio cru, cradle of Roero Arneis (to which its declinations Renesio Montorone, Renesio Valbellina and Renesio Incisa are joined), you touch Granmadre, with the homonymous rural chapel, and enter the Loreto cru, near the hamlet of Madonna di Loreto, a handful of farmhouses on which the homonymous church of the end of the 15th century stands. You cross the Ciriano and Mompellini crus, and then descend through the Mompissano, the Oesio and the San Vittore, on whose hill stands the parish of the same name, the last testimony of the original nucleus of the inhabited area of Canale.
The soil is typical of Roero, characterized by what have been defined as the Asti sands, in which the percentages of clay and silt are reduced in favor of sand, which can reach significant percentages close to 50-60 %. This composition means that the soils are rather light, permeable to water and highly oxygenated, resulting in wines with a good body and very rich in aromas. The most suitable exposures form a kind of vine-covered amphitheater facing south (with obvious excursions to the south-east and even more south-west), with an excellent contribution from solar radiation. - 1 WineTour 1 starting point
